HOWDEN COMPRESSORS Proposals Engineer

January 2019 - May 2020

  • I started my position in Howden running, securing an order within my first month and going on to book over £2million in projects in my first year.

  • My position involved the implementation of a new product, the Roots Rotary Blower. Within the second quarter, we met the previous year’s bookings. By the end of the year with over double the bookings of the previous year, also increasing overall booked margin.

  • Implementing the Rotary product into Howden involved the creation of Standard working templates and procedures to allow local and regional staff to work with continuity.

  • Part of the Rotary proposal process involves the Process Design and sizing of the compressor based on the clients requirements. I quickly learned the fundamentals of Rotary blower process design and each day deepen my technical understanding of this equipment.

  • Towards the end of 2019, I began to work with proposals involving other forms of compressor; these are aptly named the Mega projects due to their size and complexity. These project values range in the tens of millions and I felt honoured and inspired by taking them on. I later learned that shortly after my departure, the work I had done developing these bids came to fruition with a $12 Million order.

  • My final few weeks with Howden involved the development and presentation of a training programme, designed to allow anyone entering the proposals department to follow and continue the tried and tested process of delivering quick and accurate proposals.

  • The focus on safety in Howden has had a profound impact on how I live my life, simply knowing how to recognise and avoid a ‘safety moment’ has changed the way I think about risk in the tasks I do.

VEOLIA WESTGARTH Mechanical Engineer

September 2012 - November 2019

  • I began as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer in the Tendering Dept. before moving onto the role of package engineer in the Projects Dept. Working on the Projects I helped to win during my time in Tendering.

  • In September 2015 I enjoyed a secondment to Veolia MPP systems in The Netherlands on the Ichthys project for Inpex, further developing as a site construction engineer. Overseeing Mechanical completion and onto Commissioning and Functional Testing.

  • Following the load out of the MPP Module, I was honoured to be asked to join the Veolia Oil & Gas team at Head office in Paris to work on the Jazan Waste water refinery project as a Package Engineer.

  • Returning to Westgarth in February 2017 to be a part of the Mad Dog II Project team, managing the largest Valve order placed by the company while also being responsible for the project Piping and Pressure Vessels.

I had a good opportunity to know Paul while he was attending Advanced Computer Aided Engineering at GCU. However he was a guest from industry inside group of MSc students, he could make good connections thanks to his interpersonal virtues. He could accomplish 6 ACAE projects in a short time frame that is a showcase of his time management in one hand and very good understanding of Mechanical Engineering software packages. I strongly recommend Paul for Senior Mechanical Engineering roles as he can manage the project as well as people in his team.
